Codes change yearly! We take seriously our obligation to provide you with accurate and up-to-date instruction. This program is updated for the 2026 code set.

Comprehensive Outpatient Spinal Coding provides an all-inclusive approach to coding CPT® procedures. Learn to code these spinal fusion procedures with the unique perspective of nationally recognized CPT coding expert Gail I. Smith.

CPT®: Coding of Spinal Fusion Procedures
Provides the learner with clinical knowledge of spine anatomy and current medical procedures, detailed understanding of the structure of the CPT coding system, and insightful guidance on proper coding of spinal fusion procedures. Hands-on tools take the learner step-by-step from documentation to accurate coding.

CPT®: Coding of Spinal Fusion Procedures explores the documentation necessary to support coding decisions. Key course features include:

  • Translating documentation into CPT® terminology (such as interspace and vertebral segment)
  • Discussion of systematic analysis of documentation with worksheet
  • Differentiating between the approaches for spinal fusion procedures
  • Anatomic descriptions and videos that allow the content to come alive for the learner
  • Interpretation of decompression and how it impacts coding
  • Numerous practice exercises that include (case studies, knowledge checks and excerpts from operative reports)

Practical Coding Experience: Outpatient Spinal Fusion Procedures
Hands-on coding practice coupled with detailed guidance on correct code assignment.

Using Libman Education’s proprietary Coding Workspace™ format, learners sharpen their coding skills on challenging real-world operative reports varying in complexity from basic to advanced coding including each of the major types of spinal fusion while learning to interpret the documentation.

What makes this course different?

  • Course includes 10 carefully selected spinal fusion operative reports exploring key clinical concepts such as bone grafts, instrumentation, and others
  • Useful videos are provided illustrating current surgical procedures
  • Key phrases within the operative report are highlighted to uncover the documentation drivers that lead directly to correct coding assignment
  • Rationale for each procedure code includes Official Coding Guidelines and clinical explanations
  • BONUS! Proprietary resource items created by the author to improve comprehension and increase productivity: Coding Worksheet and Decision Trees

Unlimited course access during the 6-week enrollment period.

Gail I. Smith, MA, RHIA, CCS-P

Gail Smith is a nationally recognized educator, thought leader in use of Artificial Intelligence in workforce training, and advocate for the advancement of health information management (HIM) professionals.

A strong believer that ‘coders learn by coding,’ Gail has worked with Libman Education as a course author since 2013 and has written both instructional materials organized by body system (breast, spinal fusion, and others) and hands-on Practical Coding Experiences designed to increase both quality of coding and productivity.

Gail was an associate professor and director of the HIM program at the University of Cincinnati and HIM program director at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Gail was author of several textbooks, including Basic Procedural Terminology and HCPCS Coding published by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Gail currently consults with an international software company specializing in medical terminologies. Gail is President of Gail I. Smith Consulting.

Gail’s unique approach to professional development of coders is integral to her work with Libman Education.  According to Gail:

“One cannot possibly teach every coding scenario a coder will experience in their career. Coding education must focus instead on how to arrive at an accurate and defensible code assignment. It is the difference between learning to fish and being given a fish. If you learn to code instead of being given answers to memorize, you will be able to arrive at the complete codes more quickly and with greater confidence.”

“Thank you so much for providing the LibmanLightbox™ education. They are always wonderful!” — Nancie DeCourcy, Inpatient Coder, Houston Methodist

“I want a new and innovative experience for our students and the ‘Coding Workspace’ is something that will help beginning students get the necessary real world experience and also enable them to add this experience to their resumes.” — Tanda Emanuel, MBA, RHIT, CPC, Program Coordinator/Instructor, Health Information Management/Electronic Health Records, Health Sciences Division, Hagerstown Community College

“So glad to hear that Gail will be leading this course. She is an exceptional educator.” — HIM Practitioner, on Gail’s course CPT: Introduction to Procedural Coding

“I have completed the CPT update course and loved it. Pairing the audio with the visual works well for my learning style. It was well worth the money for me to spend. Much better than the quickie, run-through-everything-in-an-hour CEU offerings work allows us.” — Karin A., MPS, RHIT, CPC-I, CPC, CMA, PBT, Professional Coding Quality Specialist, on Gail’s course CPT® Code Updates

“I recently completed the CPT Update. I thought it was a wonderful course. It is so important as a coder that I know and understand the changes each year. This course was very helpful to me.” — Marcelette on Gail’s course CPT® Code Updates

“Gail Smith is one of my favorite resources, the work that your team is doing is outstanding and professional, Thanks again, for your help” — HIM Coder

“I’m pleasantly surprised at your response … really didn’t think I would receive anything at all, so, thank you! I believe that alone says a lot for Libman Education. I would recommend you to other coding professionals.” — Jennifer Jones, CPC

“LOVEEE Libman! Very happy with the classes I’ve taken.” — Linda C.

“Any of Libman Education’s courses are worth time and cost. Always walk away with a useable, clarity or reinforcement of subject matter.”

“I greatly appreciate this support and outstanding customer service!” — former student
