The CCS isn’t just a credential — it’s your competitive edge in an AI-driven future. As AI takes over the “easy stuff,” employers are actively seeking coders to audit AI-generated codes, monitor outcomes, and keep submissions accurate, complete, and defensible against audit.- In AI-supported coding settings, coders are moving from coding of routine cases to higher-complexity work, stepping into analytics and auditor roles.
- Hands-on practice can be the difference between passing the CCS and falling short. Candidates who train across all code sets, including those outside their daily work, gain the speed and command needed to complete the exam successfully.
The CCS is often called the ‘gold-standard’ of coding credentials. I prefer to think of it as a Swiss Army Knife, containing within it a broad range of skills and aptitudes and the ability to deploy skills in new ways when necessary. A coding credential, once achieved, is yours to keep. The CCS in particular, positions the credential holder for the broadest possible range of coding responsibilities.
AI is shifting the ground beneath our feet. While some may worry, my belief is that coders are uniquely capable of rolling with the seismic changes to come. Annual updates, wholesale coding system overhauls, new electronic record systems, and other major changes have always been part of the profession. We are very good at figuring out how to make new things work.
AI is the newest challenge, different in some ways but similar in others. You need to be aware of the changes and listen for what it might mean to you in your career.
The role of the coder is expected to change. Examples from across the country include these.
– Coders moving from coding responsibilities of less complexity to those with more leaving AI to excel at the repetitive and straightforward cases, aka the “easy stuff”
– Coders becoming auditors of the AI-generated coders ensuring accuracy and completeness of the final submission
– Coders using data analytics to monitor the AI-generated coding outcomes and their IT skills to correct the AI engine as needed
– Coders using their communication skills to ensure clinicians are up-to-speed on what documentation is required for accurate and complete coding
– And what else?
Thinking for a moment as an employer: how would you re-imagine the coding function in an AI-supported future? Whom would you look for as you build your team of skilled coders and AI-analysts that assure the codes produced are accurate, complete, ‘by-the-book,’ and defensible against audit?
I believe that the CCS is the single best signal to an employer that you have both the breadth and depth of coding skills required to play a key role in the new AI-supported coding function; that you are a committed professional who keeps their skills sharp and up-to-date; and that you are ready to step up to the challenge of the AI-supported future.
A Note about Hands-on Skills Training
The CCS tests an applicant’s skills in data quality and accuracy as well as mastery of coding proficiency. The exam covers ICD-10-CM for diagnosis coding; ICD-10-PCS for inpatient procedures; and CPT for outpatient procedures and professional fee services. One of the challenges for CCS candidates is gaining experience in code sets that they may not now work in daily.
The CCS and other coding credential exams are timed and many candidates report difficulty completing the exam. Hands-on practice improves a credential candidate’s command of the code systems and their ability to quickly get to the right answer and move on to the next question.
